Do you ever find yourself in a circular thinking pattern?

Here is an example of eight-year-old Aleisha’s circular thinking. “I will wait up and catch Santa this year. Santa won’t come until I’m asleep. But I need to wait up. But he won’t come then. Ahhhh.”

That thought alone put me to sleep, and yes, Santa did come. (It was also the year I recognized that Santa and my mother had the same handwriting. Hmmm…)

Circular reasoning: A is true because of B. B is true because of A.

As I wrote out this confession, I admit that I had to stop and think about what it was saying. As I reflected upon Ephesians 3:17-21, I almost fell victim to believing this passage qualified as a Wikipedia example. After all, it says…

  • I am rooted and grounded in Christ’s love.
  • This love will help me comprehend his love.

What? Huh? What kind of circular reasoning is that? I about gave up and moved on.

But then it dawned on me. I am loved. FACT. Now this love will enable me to COMPREHEND and EXPERIENCE (gnosis type of knowing) the love I already have.

Ahhhh. I get it now. Not only does Father supply the love, He supplies the way for us to feel the love—eventually comprehending how loved we are in the person of Jesus Christ. After all, He is the way, the truth, and the life.

This is mind boggling!

What a glorious hope! Today's confession speaks to this amazing love born in a humble manger. May these words continually be on your lips!

Christ dwells in my heart through faith as I walk throughout my day. I am rooted and grounded in His love. I AM LOVED. This is a fact. This is my true identity. Christ’s love further enables me to personally grasp hold of it—making it my own—so I can see what love looks like. It’s depth. Length. Height. It’s very breadth. I am loved with an affection far beyond my intellectual knowledge. I am filled up to all of the fullness of God. Right this minute. I will be joyful, thankful, and expectant today as I look around me for displays of this glorious and lavish love.

(Based on Ephesians 3:17-19)
