I love to ask a weird question to the kids I come across.

"What is the best thing you GAVE someone this Christmas?”

I always get heads that quickly look up at me in shock. Every time. They anticipated me asking them what they received for Christmas, not what they gave. It’s fun. I like watching the momentary perplexed look on their faces until they smile and know exactly the “good thing” that made a huge impact on another’s life.

Did you know our Father gives us good things, too. His favorite “good thing” is His son, Jesus Christ.

For the LORD God is a sun and shield; the LORD bestows favor and honor. No good thing does he withhold from those who walk uprightly. Psalm 84:11 ESV

But they who seek the Lord shall not be in want of any good thing. Psalm 34:10 NIV

I say to the LORD, “You are my Lord; apart from you I have no good thing.” Psalm 16:2 NIV

According to these verses, the way that our natural eyes can see these good things is by directing our attention toward another—Jesus Christ. And if we have Jesus Christ, we have good things. Period. No matter how someone else appears blessed, you have the greatest thing ever known to mankind.

May we each be people today who look to the Lord, turning our full attention on Him, in an open and soft posture of reception and expectation.

He gave. We receive. Glory!

My Father keeps me safe. My Lord is a sun and shield to me. I come to him for refuge. He bestows favor and honor. Every good thing I have comes from Him. He does not withhold any good thing from me. My Lord alone is my inheritance. He is my cup of personal blessing. He guards all that is mine. He gives me pleasant land in Himself. What a wonderful inheritance. My Lord guides me. Even at night he guides my heart. I know the Lord is always with me. I will not be shaken because I look and He is there right beside me. No wonder my heart rejoices. Christ shows me the way of life, which is found in Himself. My body rests in safety. He grants me the joy of His presence and gives me the pleasure of living forever with Him.

(Based on Psalm 16:1-2, 5-9, 11 and Psalm 34:10 and Psalm 84:11)
